The mandole is a large flat-backed mandolin made in Algiers in the 1930s for El Hadj M'Hamed El Anka. It has led chaâbi, the popular song of Algiers, ever since, and much Kabyle song too.

On the chaâbi side the list has El Anka, Guerouabi, Ezzahi, Dahmane El Harrachi, Boudjemaa El Ankis, Chaou and Kamel Messaoudi; on the Kabyle side Slimane Azem, Cheikh El Hasnaoui, Aït Menguellet, Matoub Lounès and Takfarinas.

The list has 41 records from 1963 to 2021. Most of these players recorded for radio, on 78s and on cassettes, so many of the records are reissues and anthologies, dated as the catalogues date them. About 39 hours of music, 4 days of a few records each.

The kora of Mali, the harp-lute of the jeli

The kora is the harp-lute of the jeli, the griots of Mali, Guinea, Senegal and the Gambia: 21 strings over a large calabash covered in cowhide, played with the thumbs and forefingers of both hands.
